In 2022, we trained 4,258 farmers from seven communities in conservation agriculture methods that improve soil health, increase crop yields, and reduce erosion into Lake Tanganyika. 70% of the farmers we trained adopted the practices they learned on their own farm plots—an impressive rate of uptake. Two new crops introduced this year to improve resilience to climate change include drought-resistant cassava and bananas. Along with improving food security, these crops— which require little tillage once they are planted—also reduce topsoil erosion.
